AGC Guide to the Industry
The AGC's Guide to Australasia's Gambling Industries is a comprehensive collation of statistics and data covering a wide range of information about gambling and the gambling industries in Australia and New Zealand.
The AGC Guide is updated periodically as fresh information becomes available and each chapter has a version notation.
In October 2023 the Queensland Government Statistician's Office, Queensland Treasury, released the 38th edition of Australian Gambling Statistics, covering data from 1994-95 to 2020-21.
The current AGC Guide reflects the period 2019-20 only (with limited updates in progress).
Comparisons of figures from previous editions of theAustralian Gambling Statistics should be interpreted with caution:
- From 11 March 2020, when the World Health Organisation declared a global pandemic in response to the spread of COVID-19, there were significant changes in the availability of gambling activities in Australia, with land-based gambling venues temporarily closed and major sporting codes suspended.
- The 37th edition of the Australian Gambling Statistics is the first time the Racing and Sports Betting industries were combined under the one Wagering sector banner. This represents a significant break in time series for all Australian states and territories.
TheExplanatory Notesfor the 37th edition of theAustralian Gambling Statisticsprovides detailed information on the impact of COVID-19 restrictions in each state and territory, and the rationale behind changes to the way wagering data is collected.
Online Casinos — Context for the Industry
Although the AGC Guide focuses on broad gambling industry data rather than promoting specific services or operators, online casinos are an important part of modern gambling landscapes globally. Online casino platforms offer access to digital versions of classic games such as slots, roulette, and blackjack, along with mobile accessibility and secure payment systems that have fuelled rapid growth in the sector.
In Australia and New Zealand, online casino operations exist in a nuanced regulatory environment. In Australia, certain real-money online casino games are restricted under the Interactive Gambling Act, while licensed betting and wagering services are permitted. Many players access offshore online casino sites that operate outside local licensing regimes, contributing to broader economic engagement with digital gambling. Responsible gaming measures — including self-exclusion, deposit limits, and age verification — play a key role in promoting safe participation.
Note:
National statistics in the AGC Guide for Australia are sourced from the Government Statistician (GS) which publishes, through Queensland Treasury and Trade, an annual statistical set in co-operation with all Australian state and territory governments.
